Don’t rely on anybody’s theories or any research that was performed on healthy people without type II diabetes, or on mixed groups of both type II and type I diabetics! Get your own numbers rather than gambling with your health and your life.

A second term you’ll find relating to the glycemic index is “glycemic load.” It’s calculated by multiplying the glycemic index number by the grams of carbs per serving of the food in question. A unit of glycemic load is about equal to the effect of one gram of glucose. The glycemic index database gives both the glycemic index and the glycemic load.

Whether you decide to measure your carbohydrate intake by grams on the package or by the glycemic index, be sure to keep a close count on what amounts of carbs you’re consuming and what their effects are on your own, personal metabolism. Nobody, including healthcare professionals, will be able to manage your blood sugar as well as you can yourself.
