presents for an adjustment and enjoys months of symptom -free GI function. The same warning that applies for the purple pills obviously holds true for antacids. They work by neutralizing stomach acid, destroying the necessary pH levels and making the stomach more alkaline, thus inhibiting protein digestion. An acid environment is also required in the stomach for the body to absorb calcium and use it. Otherwise the calcium just passes through the digestive system and is excreted. So taking Tums, or any antacid, as a calcium source will practically guarantee that you will not be able to absorb the calcium in it. Just the fact that it’s an antacid means that it will neutralize the stomach acid and the calcium simply cannot be absorbed. To re-cap: We have to have protein for the body to be able to re-build and repair itself daily. Eight of the 22 amino acids which are the building blocks for proteins, must come from what we eat. They’re called “ essential amino acids.” Vegetarian diets must be thoroughly researched and planned if the vegetarian hopes to get all of the necessary amino acids in the right combinations and sufficient amounts of vitamin B12 to maintain health and the body’s ability to heal itself. An adequate amount of daily protein could be established by following the research of bodybuilders – eat at least 1.5 grams of protein for every pound of body weight you carry. (There are 28 grams in an ounce.) Simply eating the right amounts of protein will not assure us that we will be able to digest and absorb the amounts of amino acids that we must have. Proper, complete digestion is a vital player for optimum health, so we should always take the necessary steps to maximize the efficiency of our digestive processes. Several things can impede the digestive process; most importantly, improper food combining, those “ purple pills” and antacids. page 40
