Before I get into the specifics of this chapter, I want to point out that there are two ways of going about trying to re-establish good health. One is “taking stuff.” The other way is “corrective actions.” The more desirable of the two is the latter. Most of this book addresses taking corrective actions in the form of making proactive, on-going, dietary changes. This chapter, however, addresses “taking stuff” - using the many wonderful foods, vitamins, minerals and herbs that are available at your local health food store for minimizing your diabetes symptoms and preventing them whenever possible. That being said: The first thing to understand about the supplements you buy at the health food store is that even though they might come in tablets or capsules they’re simply not medicines or drugs. They’re foods! They put them into tablets and capsules so that you don’t have to chew them up and experience the often unpleasant tastes you might find if you consumed them in a straight food form. Some people may be surprised to read that these “medicinal” supplements with such powerful benefits are just foods but we use many different foods for their specific physical benefits all the time. We drink coffee for its transient energy. We eat chocolate because of the feeling of well-being it produces. We eat turkey or drink chamomile tea for their calming and sleep-promoting qualities.
