Planning our meals and snacks and staying disciplined at it are a lot more simple to do when we’re at home. We just buy the right things at the grocery store so that we always at least have the opportunity to make the correct choices and avoid temptations. If you’re single, or you live with someone who feels comfortable following a similar eating plan, that makes it easier too. For instance, my wife has type II diabetes and I’m at least pre-diabetic. So we follow a very similar approach. It makes it easier for us both. It’s a far bigger challenge when you’re at someone else’s home, at a restaurant or you’re on a trip and want to have a snack. The primary consideration here is to have a pre-determined strategy so that you remain in control. I simply cannot overstate the importance of having this pre-determined strategy. Without it you’ll be subject to too many temptations, too many variables and too many opportunities to get yourself into trouble nutritionally. Let’s start with the easiest of these scenarios to control, snacks. Linda and I like to travel as do many Americans. One of the things that became incredibly apparent soon after she developed her diabetes was how very high in carbs virtually all commercially marketed snack foods are. Even the snacks that are labeled as low “ net carbs” are almost always high in total carbohydrates and profoundly affect blood sugar levels for many type II diabetics. So leaving home page 95
